The Grand SIANOK CANYON

The most fascinating highlight of interesting places to visit in Sumatra is Sianok Canyon, known as the ‘landmark’ of Bukittinggi tourism where this is the only green grand canyon situated in the middle of the city. The breathtaking grand Sianok Canyon is just about 5 minutes walk from Bukittinggi downtown to catch the glimpse of beautiful scenery from the view point at Panorama Park Sianok Canyon Bukittinggi.

JAM GADANG (Clock Tower)

The other highlights of tourist attractions in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra as the Jam Gadang (Clock Tower) is the icon of Bukittinggi tourism. The tower has got four clocks made in Recklinghausen Germany by Bernard Vortmann and was shipped via Rotterdam. Each clock face has a diameter of 80 centimetres. These were the gifts from the Queen Wilhelmina from Netherland.

It is a very unique building where the clocks use “IIII” for the number 4 instead of the traditional Roman number “IV”. The tower’s base is 13 by 4 metres and it stands 26 metres tenaciously erected strategically in the heart of Bukittinggi downtown and was built in 1926 during the Dutch colonial time.

The roof top section of the tower had been changed three times. Firstly built during the Dutch colonial era, it had a circle with a cock statue on top. Then during the Japanese occupation period was changed into the shape of Japanese traditional house roof top. Later on when Indonesia achieved its independence, the government changed the tower roof top into the shape of  traditional Minangkabau house roof top, as we currently see nowadays.


The Giant RAFFLESIA Arnoldi Sumatra

Rafflesia Arnoldii is the most popular highlights of things to do and see in Sumatra and is obviously the largest individual flower on earth besides the tallest flowering organs the “Titan Arum” (Amorphophallus titanum). This most rare flower absolutely can be found in the rain forests of Sumatra and Kalimatan (Borneo), especially in jungle surroundings Bukittinggi (West Sumatra).

The endemic giant flower of Sumatra rain forest “Rafflesia Arnoldii’ is a kind of national flower in Indonesia that could grow to a diameter of around 40 cm to 1 meter which does not have chlorophyll and stems. The giant flower can be seen by jungle trekking which takes around 4 to 5 hours in return from Bukittinggi. The indecisive distance will depend on where the flower is currently blooming.


SINGGALANG and MARAPI Volcano.

Gunung Marapi (Marapi Volcano) Bukittinggi is an active volcano elevated around 2.890m absl. Mount climber lovers associated Mount Marapi as one of  most popular Sumatra highlights to climb up.

The lovely trail is straight forward, extremely easy to do and make it  possible for anybody to easily climb up to achieve the top. It takes around 5 – 8 hours walk ascending up to the crater and enjoy the magnificent view on the top of Marapi volcano Bukittinggi, West Sumatra.

There are options of climbing up Mount Marapi Bukittinggi, Sumatra;

  • First option ; Night Trip | Start during the night around 20h00 from Bukittinggi and return to Bukittinggi on the next day around 13h00. (Most commonly people do the night trip as their goal is to reach the top to enjoy the mesmerizing view of sunrise)
  • Second option ; Morning Trip | start early in the morning at 0600 and return to Bukittinggi on the same day at 19h00.
  • Third option ; 2 days 1 night trip (camping) | usually starts at 14h00 from Bukittinggi and will camp overnight on the half way to the top. Return to Bukittinggi the next day  after enjoying the sunrise around 13h00.

KOTO GADANG (traditional handmade silver village)

A lovely countryside atmosphere surrounded by terrific terraced rice field and background with Singgalang and Marapi Volcano. A very laid back village with very well known with its traditional silver handmade and embroideries. The handmade silver designed is very unique with its own authentic craft from this village.


MINANGKABAU Traditional DANCING performance

Experince the enchanting performance of Minangkabau traditional dancing which takes around 90 minutes show at 20h30. Audience will be amazed by authentic dance movement accompanied with the passions of traditional instrument music as well as the bombastic Pencak Silat (Minangkabau Martial Arts).


Pasar Atas and Pasar Bawah (traditional market)

It is a good chance to explore and experience the local ambiance in the traditional market. There two major markets; Pasar Atas located behind the clock tower. And Pasar Bawah (wet market) is situated down the hill of Jam Gadang.
